Rarely do you find any silver mounted half stock Plains rifles. The barrel of this exquisite rifle is stamped for John Krider, who was active as a Philadelphia gunmaker from 1826-1827. The elaborate patchbox and buttplate are sterling silver, beginning to age. Beautifully engraved, including all of the screws. The back action and lock are simply stamped Philadelphia. It too is silver with scroll engraving. Hammer is engraved. Rear tang and screws are engraved. Barrel is triple gold border lined. Identification escutcheon on top of wrist. Deluxe walnut stock is hand checkered at wrist with a smooth forearm, double key protection, adjustable double set triggers, and a silver engraved elaborate trigger guard with a small forward lower tang repair. Has oak retaining rod retained by two thimbles. Blade front sight and wind drift adjustable rear sight. CONDITION: Barrel is a rich smooth brown patina. Engraving on hardware is in exquisite condition. Walnut stock has a left side rollover cheekpiece. Wood is excellent with just a few mars. Bore is near mint, razor sharp, and shiny. Small crack around wrist that has been repaired and is still lightly visible. The attentions of a good woodworker could make this disappear.
