Features two piece walnut stock, 3/4 length forearm with single band, stamped on left of receiver "S / E.G Lamson and Co. / Windsor VT / US / Ball's Patent / June 23 1863 / March 15 1864". Left side of stock has a rectangular inspector stamped GGS for George G. Saunders, who was a listed inspector of the Ball carbine. Other features include saddle ring and stud, folding leaf rear, soldered stud front sight. Approximately 1002 were manufactured. No field service listings are recorded for the Ball carbine. Flayderman notes that contracts for the Ball were issued in 1864 but delivery was not made until 1865 following the end of the war. This arm is generally considered a Civil War weapon despite never seeing service. The majority of these weapons were sold as surplus at the end of the war, primarily through the Bannnerman's catalog. This example was used very little. CONDITION: Barrel is a rich blue and soft patina mix with the "S" inspection stamp. The barrel bands retains 75% original case colors with "S" inspector stamp. Frame retains approximately 95% original case colors, some still brilliant. Stocks have a couple handling marks but are otherwise near mint. Bore is mirror bright with razor sharp lands with a couple of minor areas of black powder residue that may clean out. As nice of an example you could find.
