The Second Model is easily identifiable from the First Model by its lack of patchbox. Company literature refers to it as the Model 1863, manufactured from 1863 to 1865 totaling 20,202 manufactured. Lower tang is also stamped 1865. Left side of stock has two near perfect cartouche stamps, both being "JM" James Mills, known inspector to the Second Model. Right side of the frame is stamped "MANUFACTURED BY MASS. ARMS CO. CHICOPEE FALLS". Military "M" inspector stamp on left side of barrel. "S" stamp on left side of rear sight. Features octagon to round barrel, dovetail front sight, two leaf folding rear sight, saddle ring and bar, walnut stock, carbine buttplate with "S" inspector stamp. CONDITION: The barrel is a pleasing mix of blue-gunmetal grey with brown age freckling. Lever is grey with brown freckling. Buttplate is a rich brown patina. Right side of frame retains approximately 75% original case colors. Left side of frame retains approximately 40% case colors. 20% fire blue on hammer. Legends are sharp. Stock is near mint with just a few dings. Sharp, well-defined bore with just some minor powder residue. Since the carbine is stamped 1865, we will deal with 1865 as the date for engagements and issuance. The 9th and 10th Tennessee carried these arms to Vicksburg, the 6th Indiana remained in Nashville, 4th Tennessee went to Mobile, the 11th Indiana and the 12th Tennessee left Nashville in May and went to St. Louis to operate against the Plains Indians. Between the 6th Indiana and the three companies of the 3rd Tennessee, there were 537 Maynards reported on hand June 1st, 1865. At war's end, 871 Maynard carbines were paid for and taken home.
