Example of the easily produced headgear first worn by Marines during the Tripolitan War period and then later with volunteers during the War of 1812 and militia companies through the 1820's and 1830's. Pressed beaver skin body is 6-1/2" tall, slightly flared outward with a brim 12-1/4" in diameter. This specimen is finished with black silk hatband with period correct long "tails," and multi-layered stacked leather sunburst style cockade. The cockade is fitted with a period correct, large gold gilt Navy officer's button. CONDITION: Hat is solid with no major splits or mothing with only slight wear to the edges of the brim.
