The blade elaborately etched and gilt for 3/4 of its length. Right side with U.S. and spread eagle with riband Union and Liberty, retailed by Schuyler Hartley and Graham, New York. Left with panel For Union and Liberty and trophy of arms, E Pluribus Unum. Blade by Klauberg. The elaborate hilt with Lady Liberty crowned with helmet and dragon holding a laurel wreath and shield with the head of Medusa. The elaborate pierced and gilt guard features eleven faceted bezel set amethysts (two missing) and gilt monster head. The scabbard with three mounts all set with faceted amethysts, seven on locket, ten on middle mount, and seven on drag. The silvered scabbard engraved with shield and stars. CONDITION: Blade retains nearly all of its original bright polish and nearly all of its original gilding showing very little wear throughout. Hilt retains most of its original gilding. Lady Liberty retains most of her original silvering. Two amethysts missing as noted. Scabbard is very fine except for longitudinal score and denting on right side. Mounts retain much of original gilding and all of their original faceted amethysts. Drag has two door pinches but affect only the off side. One of the handsomest Civil War presentation swords we have had the privilege of offering.
