This model was originally developed as an experimental model in 1903. The 1912 Model Mark I was an update of the Model 1906 and was approved for government service on May 19th, 1913, whereupon it was adopted for use by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. It was extensively used on both land and sea during the first World War. 1912 introduced the grip safety, similar to the one use on the Colt Model 1911. Production never reached vast numbers, and given the nature of the hard usage by the British during the first World War, it is a fairly scarce item to find on today's market. Desirable Webley & Scott Mark I “N” with 5" barrel and horizontally adjustable rear sight with locking screw. Left slide marked with usual “W&S” Webley logo followed by three line address including production year 1914. Full serial number on frame just forward of trigger and repeated on left side of grip safety. Small inspection proofs on left side of blackened trigger, grip safety, hammer, and both sides of tang. Single action trigger with short recoil operated action similar to that of the 1910. Lanyard ring on bottom of backstrap. Correct checkered wood grips with borders. Original unmarked magazine. CONDITION: Pistol with 40% original finish with light uniform freckling and thinning of front strap, barrel, and grip safety. Comparable condition magazine and factory grips whose inner surfaces are broad arrow proofed. Bright bore with sharp rifling and minimal oxidation. Perfect manual mechanics. A highly desirable full-size Webley Mark I “N” seldom seen with these wood checkered grips. A fixture in British Naval history as this series of pistols first developed in 1903, were the first automatics ever issued to the Royal Navy. Of interest to both the collector of semi-automatic pistols and their development as well as collectors of British Naval weapons.
