Lot consists of: Two 1840 Artillery Sabers, both feature the wire wrapped leather handles with single brass guard and both have metal scabbards. One is stamped "US ADK 1865" and made by Ames. The other 1840 is stamped NJ and dated 1862. CONDITION: Both blades are very good with no over-sharpening. Accompanying them is two US 1840 Artillery Swords with metal scabbards and two Model 1832 Short Swords. The short swords were a federal designated edged weapon referred to as an Ames Model 1832 U.S. Foot Artilleryman’s short sword. Handsome and ruggedly made, this blade specimen is a product of the Ames Manufacturing Company of Massachusetts. The artilleryman’s sword features a hefty, double-edged, steel blade that measures 19” long x 1¾” wide at the hilt. The swords are marked on the obverse ricasso with “[spread-winged eagle while the reverse ricasso on one exhibits “UNITED / STATES / 1835” while other is stamped 1841 W.S. The solid brass hilts show the typical ‘fish-scale’ handle and eagle marks embossed on both sides of the pommel. Front face of the hilt cross guard on one sword exhibits inspector’s initials: “J.M.” and “H.K.C.” and ORD, while the WS sword has no such stamps. CONDITION: The blades have a pleasing brown finish overall with scattered “spotting”. Minor edge nicks are discernable. Portions of the eagle motif are worn on both. Brass hilt remains tightly attached to blade. The handles are a mellow, bronze patina. The WS stamp may be later manufacture.
