(ca 1883) 28" ovate barrel is engraved "MADE EXPRESSLY FOR W. H. THORN & CO ST JOHN NB" in unmatted portion of very nicely matted top flat. Barrel is fitted with dovetailed through one standing, one folding express rear sight and small silver bead front. Bottom of barrel is fitted with sling eye. Large Field's patent single shot action with self cocking hammer and opening lever on right side is engraved "THOMAS TURNER" on right. His serial number is on trigger guard bow, and patent use number "872" is on floorplate in front of bow. Field patent information is on left side of action. Well marbled European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/2" over steel buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip, and a sling eye is on toe line. Matching slim forend has horn tip and attaches to barrel with screw through diamond shaped escutcheon. Weight: 9 lbs 6 oz. CONDITION: Very good as partially refinished. Barrel retains traces of original blue but has many areas of cleaned pitting, as this rifle was most likely used for seal hunting, and was exposed to a harsh maritime environment. Action is in like condition, with traces of blue where protected. Stocks retain nearly all of an old oil refinish, checkering cleaned. Metford rifled bore is very fine to excellent, with some frosting toward breech end. Action is smooth. MGM225. CORRECTION: Previous owner states this rifle is chambered for .450 Black Powder Express and not .577/.450 as previously listed.
