The Marlin engraving patterns established in 1897 lists "No. 1 receiver engraved with scroll, fancy borders, and left side game animal in circle" at an additional price of $5. A nearly identical example of this type of engraving on the same weapon can be seen on page 534, upper right two illustrations, as the work of the Ulrich Workshop in the book "Marlin Firearms" by Brophy. The stocks have 'A' checkering at pistol grip and forend. Standard features include full octagon barrel, full magazine tube, sporting sights, takedown, tang sight, checkered walnut stock, pistol grip, and Marlin monogram black composite shotgun buttplate. The panel scene on this rifle is antlered game in the woods. All other scrollwork is typical as well of the No. 1 type. CONDITION: Frame retains approximately 80% of the original case colors with high polished bolt and muted colors on lever. The barrel is a fine, homogeneous mix of blue with soft patina, high edge wear and razor sharp edges and legends. Tube has approximately 90% blue. Stocks are excellent with nice extra finish wood with usual dings. Distinctive, sharp rifled bore with some light black powder abrasions. Fine action. Finding any boys rifle with custom ordering is unusual and this example is exquisite with its case colors mostly intact and lovely panel scene on left. Rarely do you ever seen engraving on boys rifles.
