Jean Samuel Pauly invented the base fire cartridge, the forerunner to all modern breechloaders. His guns has limited following in France, before he associated himself with Durs Egg, another Swiss National, and made guns in England. This gun, made while he was still in France, has 32" barrels. Monkey tail breech loading system has needle fire strikers in upper section and hidden hammers cocked by external, nicely filed false hammers in bottom. "Inventor" "Pauly" and "Brevetee a Paris" are on either side of breech pivot. Stock and furniture are of French pattern. Stock is of stump figured elm and measures 14" over steel buttplate on 1/2" extension. Right hand cheekpiece has carved scroll at rear. Bulbous grip is checkered. Other furniture is of nicely filed steel, including trigger guard and trigger plate with fancy finial matching that on buttplate. Swiveling sling loops are installed. CONDITION: Good as completely refinished. Barrels have an old brown, showing some pattern, including an original patching of section of right barrel. All other metal parts are polished bright. Stock has old shiny oil finish, checkering well worn, nearly smooth on forend. Mechanically good. MGM180.
