One of the approximately 20,000 Maynard tape prime conversions performed by Remington under contract in 1856-57. Pattern 1816 flintlock muskets were converted to rifle an sighted configuration and utilizing the Maynard tape prime mechanism. These muskets were used extensively in the early period of the Civil War and were frequently observed in Southern use. 42-1/4" round rifled barrel with slide adjustable rear sight graduated to 400 yards. Patented tape prime lock marked "REMINGTON 1857". One piece oil finished American walnut stock with smooth buttplate and three barrel bands with spring retainers. Barrel is strongly "P" proofed with eagle acceptance marking and inspected "JT" as well as being dated 1856 on rear tang. A indiscernible inspection or cartouche is visible on left side of stock. Proper recessed tulip head rammer is present. CONDITION: Very good as has been moderately cleaned using either a wire wheel or possible bead blast machine to all metal components and parts. The bore is very good with visible rifling and light roughness in the grooves. The lock and tape prime mechanism operates properly. The one piece walnut stock is good, full sized with typical period impressions and bruises and light scratches.
