Originally produced in 1891 and later Arsenal rebuilt into the 5-1/2" Artillery configuration. US inspected on left side of case colored frame with traditional two line patent. Barrel is arsenal modified to 5-1/2" and is "DFC" inspected and numbered 5633 under ejector rod housing. One piece military walnut grips are void of inspectors marks but are numbered 5215 in rear back strap mortise. These Artillery Single Action revolvers have a wonderful history from the late Indian War period through the Philippine and Spanish American War periods. Most of these revolvers where very hard used and many were later modified for civilian use reducing the original configuration examples for collectors today. CONDITION: Very fine with most arsenal reapplied blue finish remaining on barrel, cylinder and grip straps. Muzzle has a 1-1/2" area of finish loss and slight period pitting from holster carry. Grip straps are slightly worn with over 60% finish remaining on backstrap and front strap has silvered out as is traditionally found. Bore is very fine and strong. Cylinder chambers are smooth and without distress while exterior has typical edge wear. Grips are full sized and with out material loss. Screws are very good with several being lightly fouled. Action is crisp with solid lock up and functions properly. A very good and above average example of the Indian War period iconic Colt Single Action.
