Likely made in the late 1860's in France, this was quite a high grade gun when new. The Bernard pattern Damascus barrels with sling on bottom rib are finely gold inlaid on tops with gold vines near breech end and top rib with geometric floral pattern and marked "Berendorf Amateur" in gold. Muzzle end of barrel with gold flower near bead and gold barrel bands on both ends. Front pivoting Lefaucheux locking system. The back action locks are gold lined and completely covered in cross hatch engraving pattern throughout. The cross hatch pattern extends to almost every surface of the action! The trigger guard is gold inlaid with letters "JB". The uncheckered buttstock with sling near toe terminates with full steel buttplate. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels retain about 85% of what appears to be their original Damascus pattern. The greyed action shows minor wear but engraving is well defined throughout. Gold inlays are all very good. Bores are good with scattered light pitting. Mechanics are fine. When new, this was a very high quality gun, perhaps made for an extremely wealthy family or royalty. Really a rare and unusual gun!
