(Circa 1873) 41-3/8" Skelp Damascus barrel with Nock form at breech end is engraved "Holland & Holland 98 New Bond Street London" on top. Barrel flat is stamped "8" and with serial number which does not appear anywhere else on this gun, and is most likely a W&C Scott number corresponding to 1873. Bottom of barrel is stamped with London black powder proofs. Nickel plated round bodied Jones under lever single shot action is fitted with peninsula back spring right hand lock with flat faced and chamfered serpentine hammer. Action is engraved with line and small scroll borders. "HOLLAND & HOLLAND" is on lockplate. Dark lightly streaked and figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14" over very old, most likely original, Silver pad with rounded top spur. Point pattern checkering is at grip, and a vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching long forend with horn tip attaches to barrel with captive side bolt through oval steel escutcheons. CONDITION: Fine, as partially restored. Barrel retains nearly all of a very good quality re-brown, address engraving considerably softened. Action and lock retain approximately 90% original nickel plating, most loss due to flaking, is on operating lever. Stocks retain most of appears to be their original oil finish with numerous scattered marks, abrasions, and light dents. Checkering lightly worn. Bore is very fine with a few scattered light pits and a few scratches. Action is tight. Lock is very fine. MGM212.
