A fine pair of classic "Queen Anne" turn off pistols by a renowned maker of this type, Robert Wilson. 5-1/4" turn off barrels with cannon muzzles and border engraving at breech. Breech is well engraved with sprays of foliage, elaborately signed London at top, Wilson below frizzen spring. London view and proof marks with "RW", for Robert Wilson. Swan neck cocks with border engraving and single spray of foliage. Engraved topjaws, molded and engraved frizzens. Iron trigger guards with border engraving and single scroll. Silver furniture comprising grotesque mask buttcap, stand of arms silver sideplate and large and elaborately cast and chased silver thumbpieces, the owners crest removed. Highly figured walnut butts. One butt with old repair, appears to be of period rather than recent. CONDITION: Barrels and frames cleaned to bright metal, engraving and maker's name still very crisp. Hammers cleaned to bright metal but once again engraving is crisp. All small parts appear to be original including top jaws and screws. Silver furniture with light wear as noted. Figured buttstocks, one with repair and one tight crack, other in good overall condition with minor marks. Actions are crisp with strong springs. 12-1/2" overall. Bores would rate excellent for pistols of this period. A most attractive pair of this highly desirable type.
