31 - 1/4" blade etched on right side with trophy of arms, American eagle in shield, and E Pluribus Unum. W.H. Horstmann and Sons, Philadelphia, with fort iron proof on spine. Left side of blade etched with foliage and arms, very large U.S.M.C.. Brass hilt, pierced with flowers, pommel of standard form, leather grip with single strand copper wire. Scabbard of standard foot officer's type with two hangers. Appears to have a period, possibly original, gold bullion knot. CONDITION: Blade is good with etching still visible, tip of blade is deeply pitted on both sides, probably from moisture in scabbard. Hilt is good with age patina, unpolished. Leather grip is excellent with little wear. Scabbard is deep even age brown on steel. Brass mounts with no gilding remaining. Drag with a few minor door pinches. Top mount with a few minor scores. Marine swords of this period are extremely rare.
