This sword is accompanied by a signed letter stating that it is from the private collection of author Richard H. Bezdek and that it was displayed in his library. The sword is featured on page 548 of his book "American Swords and Sword Makers". For another identical example, see plate 351.S on page 178 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. Neumann dates the sword circa 1775-1780. The Spanish style blade is possibly of American manufacture and is slightly curved with three partial fullers. The brass hilt features two branches on the left side, a forward facing quillon, and a backstrap integral with the bird's head pommel. Leather grip has three strands of copper wire and a sheet brass ferrule at front. Complete with associated black leather scabbard with brass mounts; throat mount has a frog stud. CONDITION: Blade shows some wear and corrosion. Grip has been professionally re-wrapped. Hilt retains a dark patina. Scabbard very good with some crazing and minor losses to surface. Top mount a period replacement. A very nice American horseman's saber.
