A California knife of the finest grade by the genre's most famed maker, Michael Price, with silver wrapped handle; scales of walrus ivory, pins and escutcheons of gold. The blade is marked M. PRICE SAN FRAN on the ricasso. All of the silver work is finely engraved, as are the edges of the gold escutcheons on both sides. The silver sheath is engraved on both sides, the obverse with scrollwork and a foliate scene that includes a California bear and a galloping horse, and the reverse with foliate scrollwork and the name "H.W. Carter". Spring steel clip typical of Price's work. Pictured in The Antique Bowie Knife Book by Adams, Voyles, & Moss (pp.462-463), and in California's Best: Old West Art & Antiques by Brad & Brian Witherell (p.138). A beautiful example of Price's finest work. c.1856-1889. CONDITION: Blade has been carefully cleaned, leaving only traces of light pitting in a couple of areas. The handle scales with one chipped area on the reverse side.
