Blade with sharpened clip point is stamped on ricasso S.C. WRAGG 25 FURNACE HILL SHEFFIELD, and stamped on its face with several ciphers including a hunter on horseback and two dogs chasing a stag, a sphinx reading TRY ME, a British Registry mark, a strange man-lion-sea creature reading I SURPASS [AL]L, a military officer with sword, and a steer reading FOR USE. Nickel silver oval guard and ornately stamped "cutlery" style handle. Sheath a period replacement. c.1845-1850s. Samuel C. Wragg was one of the most prolific bowie knife makers for the United States, and is well known for his "ciphered" blade knives of this exact type. Wragg registered this design with the British government in 1845. CONDITION: Blade has barely been sharpened, with tarnish over the original finish. Handle is almost dent-free.
