Full tang bowie knife with flat S-guard, stag scales with escutcheon on obverse, and coffin shaped end. The spear point blade is stamped on its ricasso S.C. WRAGG 25 FURNA[CE H]ILL SHEF[FIELD]. It is in beautiful, uncleaned original condition, and is fully etched with a spread winged eagle atop a cannon with crossed flags and the words "E Pluribus Unum," and "Palo Alto", surrounded by scrollwork. The Moroccan leather sheath is black with red, green and gold highlights, with nickel silver throat and tip. c.1846-1850s. The Battle of Palo Alto (Mexican War) was fought May 8, 1846, with General Zachary Taylor defeating a superior Mexican force. Samuel C. Wragg was one of the most prolific bowie knife makers for the United States, and his knives are always in high demand. CONDITION: Though tarnished, the blade shows mostly original polish with some scattered pits and spidering. The handle with no obvious flaws, the sheath tip is dented and the frog stud is missing.
