A fine early Sheffield bowie, with clip point blade featuring deeply etched scrollwork on both sides of the blade and a panel on the front reading, faintly, "I Go Ahead" - perhaps derived from "Be sure you're right, then go ahead," said to be the personal motto of Davy Crockett. Flat nickel silver guard and ornate horse head pommel, nickel silver handle frame, mother of pearl scales with escutcheon on obverse. Superbly embossed Moroccan leather sheath with nickel silver throat and tip, the tip embossed with flutes. Pictured in The Antique Bowie Knife Book by Adams, Voyles, & Moss (pp.320-321). A different horse head pommel bowie with identical etching, marked for R. Bunting and Wilson, Hawksworth & Moss, can be found in Classic Bowie Knives by Abels (pp.52-53). c.1830s-1840s. CONDITION: The blade apparently unused but with several patches of pitting, The sheath with a small damaged area near tip.
