Rare, classic bowie knife by Alfred Hunter of Newark, NJ, with carved ivory handle in Hunter's typical style. Escutcheons on both sides, the obverse engraved "L.G.", nickel silver guard and ferrule. Clip point blade about 5/32" thick, stamped ALFRED HUNTER. No sheath. c. 1830s-1840s. While Hunter seems to have not left us with much historical evidence of his bowie knife production, we do know that he was producing them as early as 1836 and that, for a time he produced a fair number of fine quality knives with stout blades. CONDITION: Blade with a few small nicks and a few randomly placed pits. The handle is split lengthwise as is typical of Hunters, with the crack running along the bottom side which is a favorable location.
