Clip point blade with sweeping sharpened clip, marked on ricasso WOODHEAD & HARTLEY 36 HOWARD STREET, SHEFFIELD. The blade with full original polish, appearing unused except for several nicks along the edge of the blade. Nickel silver guard, coffin-shaped handle frame and horse-alligator pommels; mother of pearl handle scales with escutcheon on obverse. Red Moroccan leather sheath with nickel silver tip and throat. c.1847-1849. Woodhead & Hartley were located at 7 Lambert Street from 1840-1847, after which they moved to the 36 Howard Street address that George Woodhead would make famous on his own after 1849. Knives with this marking are quite rare, having been produced only for a short period of time. CONDITION: Blade with scattered surface spots and a few small pits, edge with nicks as noted. Otherwise, much of original finish remains. Handle is a little loose.
