Top quality, early bowie knife with heavy 3/8" thick blade, "Spanish notch" and much of the original crocus polish, stamped on ricasso FALYON / EDINBURGH. The full tang shows a severe taper towards the butt, with stag scales on milled nickel silver liners and fileworked nickel silver guards, the halves separated with serrated pieces of iron. The well built sheath of Moroccan leather features a nickel silver tip and throat. c.1830s-1840s. The maker of this knife, heretofore unidentified, may have been F.A. Lyon of Leith Street in Edinburgh; a possibility worthy of further research. This well known and attractive knife appears on pp. 246-247 of The Antique Bowie Knife Book by Adams, Voyles, & Moss. Altogether, a beautifully made knife that may be one of a kind. CONDITION: The blade with much original polish along with scattered pitting, and a few light sharpening scratches; the handle with a crack in the front scale.
