Spear point blade with sharpened false edge, etched in panel "The Chase, The Chase" and with forged bolster stamped GRAVELEY & WREAKS, NEW YORK. Nickel silver handle frame with integral guard, ivory scales with escutcheons on both sides. With original Moroccan leather sheath. Pictured in The Antique Bowie Knife Book by Adams, Voyles, & Moss (pp.68-69). c. 1836-1838. Graveley & Wreaks was only in business a short time, but the firm is nevertheless associated with a number of famous and highly regarded bowie knives. A July, 1836 Graveley & Wreaks ad promotes their "ARKANSAS, TEXAS and HUNTERS knives..." and given the etching, this model likely represents the firm's "Hunters" knife. CONDITION: The blade in unsharpened, unused condition with some fine chips on the edge and some scattered spiderwebs and fine pits. The handle scales cracked in five places. Frog stud missing from sheath.
