Classic early Sheffield bowie, 1830s, with clip point blade over 1/4" thick, featuring a "Spanish notch" and sharpened false edge. The blade is stamped W (crown) R, W. BUTCHER SHEFFIELD, and is etched across the face with foliate scrollwork and the words "Arkansas Toothpick", although only about half of the etching is still visible. The "dogbone" style handle, octagonal in cross section, is built on a nickel silver frame including ferrule and pommel cap, and has escutcheon plates on each of the rosewood scales. No sheath. An attractive knife that presents itself well. c.1830s. CONDITION: Blade has been cleaned and still retains a few scattered light pits, the handle with one crack.
