Produced early in the Civil War by John D. Chevalier of New York, this bowie knife makes clear where its allegiances lie with large, deep stampings CHEVALIER UNION KNIFE on one side and "DEATH TO TRAITORS" on the other. A leather buffer provides cushioning where the guard and ricasso meet. Brass guard and handle frame with checkered ebony inserts. No sheath. Pictured in The Antique Bowie Knife Book by Adams, Voyles, & Moss (pp.52-53). Accompanied by 1/6 plate ambrotype in Union case of Civil War soldier with identical knife under his belt, along with a rifle, pistol, and a U.S. buckle. c. 1861-1865. CONDITION: The blade barely used with light sharpening, no cracks in handles. Hinge on image case needs reglued.
