Slightly over 20,000 Starr carbines were acquired for the Union cavalry in 1863-64. The 24th New York used these guns at the battle of Cold Harbor and the Siege of Petersburg. They were also widely used in the Western Campaign by the 1st New York, 11th Missouri, 1st Arkansas and the 51st Kansas. It is a breechloading percussion model that featured a round barrel, single brass barrel band, brass buttplate, military rear sight (base intact but missing sight) and post front sight. Stock and forearm are made of walnut. There is a cartouche on left side that is visible but not readable. Left side of frame has saddle ring and stud. CONDITION: Metal is all gun metal grey mixed with brown patina. All metal surfaces have an overall salt and pepper pitting texture on entire surface. Stocks are very good with usual dings and impressions. Rifling is sharp and visible but dirty. A good "been there" example.
