Offered is a well used 5th Model. It is a single shot, percussion breechloader with saddle ring and bar, rear sling swivel, and walnut stocks. Only the Sharps carbine saw more use by Union forces during the Civil War. There were over 4,000 Burnside carbines in the hands of Union forces at the start of the 1864 Campaign. This later carbine was used in nearly all the Cavalry conflicts during 1864-65. In February of 1864, General George Custer's Michigan 6th and 7th Cavalry raided Richmond to free some Union prisoners. Most with armed with Burnside carbines. CONDITION: Barrel is a blue-brown soft patina. The case colors on frame have faded to a nickle appearance with overall age freckling and some light pitting on block, top of frame and upper tang. Sharp legends. Well defined rifling with some black powder abrasion. The left side stock cartouche is visible but not readable.
