The steel guard of great sophistication as two of the branches are inletted into the broad knuckle guard. The urn shaped pommel of typical late 18th century form. The leather covered wooden grip with a single strand of flat copper wire binding it. The blade of backsword form with two narrow fullers. CONDITION: Condition of the pommel and guard is smooth metal on outside and rough blackened surface on interior. The blackened leather covered wooden grip showing great age but is untouched throughout. Copper wire unpolished. 27 - 3/4" blade with staining and pitting and two brazed repairs showing great age. 34" overall. This sword could well have been carried by an officer during the American Revolution and it is most attractive.
