For a nearly identical example, but without the U.S. surcharges, see plate 372.S on page 185 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. Straight tapered blade with narrow partial fuller and false edge, stamped "US" in early large font at ricasso. Iron "double ellipse" guard with large "US" surcharge on ellipse at knucklebow. Knucklebow is flat and shows separations to layers of hand-forged iron. Smooth cylinder of lapped iron around grip. CONDITION: Blade retains a heavy brown patina with some corrosion, marking shows proper age. Hilt retains a mostly dark heavy patina with corrosion commensurate to that on blade, marking is deep and shows proper age. A very scarce and desirable American Revolutionary War period cutlass.
