The Model 1836 was the last US Martial pistol made using the flintlock mechanism. About 41,000 were manufactured between 1836 and 1844 by Asa Waters and Robert Johnson. This was the standard issue pistol for the Mexican War and many were converted to percussion for later use during the American Civil War. Round smoothbore steel barrel with traces of inspector markings near breech. Small brass half moon front sight and oval rear sight on tang. Flat beveled lockplate with rounded tail section, stamped in the center "U.S./R. JOHNSON/MIDDN. CONN/1844", brass pan and reinforced cock. Standard Model 1836 steel furniture and swivel type ramrod with button plunger. Plain walnut half-stock with inspector cartouche "WAT" for William A. Thornton. CONDITION: Good. Barrel and furniture retain a freckled light grey patina with scattered light pitting. Lock reconverted. Stock with some scattered chips and minor cracks. This model is considered by many collectors to be the best made, best looking, and best performing flintlock martial pistol produced.
