This unusual powder horn measures approximately 18" overall with a two stage spout section, divided by relief wedding band with two holes for sling attachment. Section below ring is faceted and main engraved portion is separated by a scalloped edge. Front of the horn is engraved with a large leafy branch and a crude quadruped. The back portion of the horn has a large recessed panel, possibly where an inscription once was. The removal of this area was intentional and done during the period, perhaps made like this. Shaped convex wood base retained by iron pins and carved to contour the flange at the base which has two holes for sling attachment. The horn has very attractive architecture. CONDITION: Horn retains a pleasing honey patina and shows some wear from carrying and scattered marks. Back of the horn has a couple small areas of insect damage. Otherwise, very good.
