This identified powder horn is featured as horn #41 in the book "Engraved Powder Horns" by Nathan L. Swayze. Large tapered 19-1/2" curved dark green body, made for a left-handed man. The horn featured a turned domed base of burl wood, retained by wooden pegs. The spout with relief wedding band and faceted section with incised carving on the flats. Inscribed "BENJAMIN CLARK 1776" encircling the horn just above the base. There is also other decoration including a large two masted ship, two dogs, a fish, a bird, an unusual four-legged creature, and a mermaid. There are also some geometric circles and hearts around the horn. Benjamin Clark was a private in Captain Hamilton's Company (seacoast). He enlisted in 1775 and his company was stationed in Barnstable, Massachusetts. CONDITION: Body shows a dark green patina with one quarter size area that appears to have been damaged from a burn and some other scattered scratches and marks from use. Some light carry wear and minor cracking to spout and minor chipping to relief ring. A few missing pegs around plug. A very nice identified powder horn.
