This horn has its original receipt from Guthman Americana, dated December 6th, 1999 on his letterhead. This horn was also featured in the Pennsylvania Antique Gun Collector's Association "The Monthly Bugle", No. 419 from September 2004, in an article by Roy Garizio; a copy is included with the horn. There are also four stereoview cards of Lake George and Sabbath Day Point. The large, curved, two stage body of the horn measures approximately 14". The recessed spout section shows evidence that this horn once had a brass charger. The wooden plug is turned and has a large iron staple in the center. There are generous traces of red or salmon colored paint. The carved section is separated with a scalloped edge and is inscribed in large letters "JoB Stillwill his horn / Made at LAKe Georg oct ye 9 / AD 1758". It is also decorated with foliate motifs, a small fish, a table set with bottles and goblets, an Indian with a rifle and smoking a Peace Pipe, a dog chasing a moose, a man firing a cannon inscribed "24" (probably for a 24 pounder); there is also a bird's eye view of Lake George labeled "L G" and a depiction of a fort labeled "F E" for Fort Edward, and other depictions of forts. CONDITION: The horn retains a pleasing darker honey patina and shows a clear area of carry wear beneath the inscription and a few other scattered marks from use. Original flange for sling was broken off during the period of use and is worn smooth. This is a very attractive and historic horn with provenance to an important collection.
