Included with this powder horn is a handwritten receipt dated November of 2001 and signed by William H. Guthman. Also included is a rare stereoview card from the 1870's by American Scenery of the ruins at Crown Point, New York; taken at a time when the walls were still standing. The curved body measures approximately 12-1/2" overall with vase-and-ring turnings at the spout, as well as a lower relief ring about 1" above the engraved section. The horn is inscribed "Doctr / Samuel / Howe's / Horn / Crownpoint / Novr 13th 1759". There is also a border of foliate designs around the base and a flat wooden plug with a single hole for sling attachment. Horns inscribed to doctors are quite scarce. Guthman states in his receipt that Samuel Howe was from Connecticut and this horn was a wonderful example of the Lake George school of engravers. CONDITION: Horn retains a pleasing, light honey patina showing some light carry wear and a minor age crack at the base, as well as some chipping around the tip of the spout. A very attractive French and Indian War powder horn from a well known and well respected collector.
