Lot consists of: (A) Model 1858 Civil War canteen with brown butternut colored wool covering with original full length cotton linen sling. The wool cover is intact with a 1" wear spot and some scattered rust stains. There are no holes in the metal, and all of the seams are intact. There are some small dents that correspond to each other on either side. Most likely done by the soldier that carried the canteen so it would rest easier against his hip and not bounce in an irritating fashion due to the round shape as originally issued. The cover had a stencil applied to one side with what appears to be a regimental number. Because of wear and age, the stencil is difficult to read. The pewter spout features a desirable legible maker’s stamp (J.C. JOHNSON & CO. FEB.5.65.) and is solid and intact where it is mounted to the canteen, and it retains the original cork stopper in the throat with iron chain. All three iron sling keepers are intact. Overall, a very solid example. (B) Model 1878 Indian Wars period canteen with remnants of earlier style Rock Island Arsenal narrow straps. The canteen is complete with both of the triangular iron hangers that were attached as part of the modification process the arsenal used to convert the Civil War canteens to the Model 1878 Pattern. Large and crisp "NY" and "TROOP C" cavalry stencils are clear and legible. The cover is solid and free from any wear holes or tears with intact seams. The body of the canteen is free of dents and/or deformities. The original cork stopper and brass chain are intact. (C) Model 1878 Indian Wars era canteen with original wide leather shoulder strap present. Canvas body is intact with numerous rust bleed through stains overall. Clear and large "U.S." stencil with Regt. markings on the reverse side. Iron chain and cork stopper are intact. Pewter spout bears the maker stamp: "HADDEN, PORTER & BOOTH PHILa." CONDITION: Very good overall.

Condition: (Very Good).
