According to the 1969 Factory letter, serial no. 1143 was shipped on July 22nd, 1895 as an octagon barreled .38-55 with plain trigger. The so-called "10 o'clock screw" can be found on the right side of the frame above the loading port at approximately ten o'clock position. This screw was eliminated in 1895, so only the earliest rifles will be found with this feature. All other features are standard: full magazine, German nickel front sight, Winchester semi-buckhorn rear sight, blued finish, walnut stocks, and case colored hammer and lever. Surviving examples of these early models are extremely scarce, and those with condition are extremely difficult to find. CONDITION: This rifle remains in all factory original condition. Barrel and tube are basically a soft grey patina with razor sharp legends. Left side of frame retains approximately 70% of the original high polish blue, while the right side retains approximately 40% bright blue; balance homogeneous blend of soft brown and gun metal patina. Traces of case colors on hammer and lever. 85% original blue on bolt. 30% original high polish blue on loading gate. Buttplate is grey patina. Wood is excellent, proud to metal, with a small repair on left side of forearm and some light period added finish. Fine action. Bore exhibits sharp lands and grooves, surprisingly nice for this early black powder cartridge. An extremely handsome, homogeneous, early four digit, antique Winchester.
