This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/12/2019
Lot consists of: (A+B) Not considered grenades in any fashion, these are two nearly identical examples of World War II 50mm mortar projectiles for the Japanese Type 89 mortar. Known by US troops as the “Knee” mortar for the shape of the base plate, this projectile was a very popular souvenir by US forces at the end of the war. Each of these examples carries the late marking pattern, and both have unmatched numbers. In fine condition overall, each has clear paint showing light wear. Identical in nearly every aspect, the major difference is in the fuzes. The first of the two mortars has the standard brass bodied Type 88 fuze normally seen. The second however has the lesser seen steel variant of the fuze, used as supplies of brass became critically short late in the war. (C+D) Two very clean examples of the World War II Italian Italy World War II 45mm Brixia mortar. Fired from the Model 35 Light Infantry Mortar, these have both, the red band marking of the high explosive round and the blue/white band of the reduced charge training projectile. The HE projectile is particularly nice in that it includes the emptied internal explosives container. Both mortars are in excellent physical condition, paint on the HE round is excellent, the training mortar has very good paint. Pull rings and safety caps are present on both mortars.
