For an identical example, see plate 62.S on page 82 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. Neumann dates this sword between 1767 and 1791, stating that in 1767, an ordinance gave specific details for this new pattern of grenadier's saber. The sword has a slightly curved single edged blade with flat faces, the right side is engraved with foliate motifs, a large engraved flaming bomb, and a small crown over "R" proofmark. The opposite side has "GRENADIER" engraved in large letters over a flaming grenade. The spine is inscribed "M=Ture R=le Datsace". The hilt is solid cast brass with a bird's head pommel with tall capstan and grip fluted. Backstrap is faceted. CONDITION: Blade retains a spotted grey patina, with some dark areas and scattered pitting. Engraving is very good and visible. Hilt retains a dark patina with a few scattered marks from use and some minor damage to capstan. A very nice Revolutionary War era grenadier's hanger.
