The 34 - 1/2" massive blade is nearly 2" wide at the ricasso. Has two short fullers marked inside "Bragh" for Worthy, with cross and orb on each side and a copper device pierced through blade. The basket hilt is a masterpiece of Scottish forging with seven branches. The broad middle branch pierced with 21 oblong elaborate piercings and hearts. The basket itself measures nearly 12" in diameter. Remnants of engraving throughout. Short protruding quillon, fish skin grip with triple braided copper wire, copper Turk's heads. Ovoid pommel beautifully fluted and engraved. Grip retains its original leather washer. CONDITION: Blade is mostly shiny grey metal with legends easily read. Basket has been polished but retains most of its original engraving, somewhat worn. Interior of basket is heavily patinated, an indication of its authenticity. Pommel polished en suite with basket. Fish skin grip in excellent condition. Retains an old, possibly period, red cotton fringe at top. All together, one of the most impressive pre-Culloden basket hilts offered for sale in many years and sure to please the collector of the very best in Scottish weapons.
