Probably French, early 18th century. Straight, tapered, double edged blade with facets on faces. Top of blade etched on both sides, one side with a rampant lion motif. Clam shell guard features relief chased busts and foliate motifs on both sides. Rapier style hilt, knuckle bow decorated with relief chased masks and foliate designs. Round pommel with capstan decorated en suite. Grip is wrapped with repeating strands of twisted silver wire with a braided ferrule at top and bottom. This is a fine silver hilted small sword and an example of what would have been carried by an officer during the Revolutionary war. CONDITION: Blade shows heavy wear and a few nicks to edges, now retains a grey patina; engraving on right side is mostly worn off. Hilt polished bright and decoration shows high edge wear, much of detail has been smoothed. The quillon has been replaced and the left side of the guard is slightly bent.
