June 12-13, 2019 Edged Weapon, Armor, & Militaria
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/12/2019
The 38" hand-and-a-half blade with typical Saxon cross and short fuller. Lines with dashes flowing into the guard. The blackened iron hilt with two rings and elaborate four rings at back. Straight quillons ending in acorn type finials. The ovoid pommel, blackened en suite with hilt, has six flanges and incised decoration withing. The waisted wooden grip with old black leather covering. CONDITION: Extraordinarily good, blade is polished and looks very much like other daggers and swords that were sold from the Saxon armory during dispersals beginning in the early 20th century and continuing until the 1960s at Sotheby's London. Guard retains much of what appears to be original blackening. Pommel is blackened over old fine pitting. Leather grip is excellent with only minor wear. Sword is 48" overall and balances correctly 6" forward of quillons. Note: Swords such as this were copied by the famous Dresden sword maker Conrad, however, this particular sword is not oversize as most of Conrad's copies are and therefore it is distinctly possible that this is a genuine piece from the Saxon armory. Regardless, it is a most elegant and attractive hand-and-a-half sword.
