(A) Nickel silver guard and ferrule with turned rosewood handle, brass cap on end unscrews from tang to reveal three bone dice. Clip point blade with sabre grind, deeply etched on its face with standing indian armed with dagger and the word DEFENCE (hard to read); and the words COMBINATION. PATENT 8792, SHEFFIELD. With Moroccan leather sheath and nickel silver throat. The Indian-with-"Defence" trademark belonged to Sheffield's James Burnand who was established as a cutlery maker during the 1850s and who continued as James Burnand & Sons into the 20th century. Condition: Blade with moderate sharpening, dark with tarnish, slightly bent. Handle split completely in half, needs to be glued. tip missing from throat. Blade 6-3/4" overall 11-3/8" (B) Nickel silver guard and ferrule with turned horn handle; back portion of handle unscrews to reveal secret compartment concealing three bone dice. Clip point blade with sabre grind, stamped with snake in figure-8 and the words CAST STEEL. Replacement leather sheath with brass throat. The figure-8 snake was a trademark of S. Kitchin and later S. & J. Kitchin of Sheffield, active from 1853 until its sale to Ralph Martindale & Co. in 1957. CONDITION: blade with light use and light scattered pitting. 5-1/2" blade, 9-3/4" overall.
