(A) Lockback, clip point blade marked JPH HOLMES NO 5 + SMITH FIELD SHEFFIELD. Nickel silver horsehead pommel with cannon and liberty cap motif, and foliate crossguards, wooden scales with inset mother of pearl discs. CONDITION: Guards and handle scales are replacements; blade is about 5/8" short and has been lightly cleaned. 6" closed, 10" fully open. Established circa 1837, the known Joseph Holmes knives all seem to date from the late 1830s or 1840s. (B) Lockback, clip point blade marked HOBSON, for John B. Hobson of Sheffield. Nickel silver crossguards, horn scales with three mother of pearl discs, mother of pearl pommel pieces. c.1850s-1860s. CONDITION: Blade with overall salt & pepper pitting, handle with a few cracks, a chip and small patched areas. Blade about 1/2" short. 6-1/8" closed, 10-3/8" fully open
