(A) Nickel silver guard and ferrule with turned handle of ebonized wood; back portion of handle unscrews to reveal secret compartment concealing two bone dice. Spear point blade with sabre grind, deeply etched with standing indian armed with dagger and the word DEFENCE; the face of the blade deeply etched COMBINATION. PATENT 8792, SHEFFIELD. No sheath. The indian-with-"Defence" trademark belonged to Sheffield's James Burnand who was established as a cutlery maker during the 1850s and who continued as James Burnand & Sons into the 20th century, this knife dates c. late 19th century. CONDITION: Blade appears unsharpened with overall light pitting, heavy pitting towards tip on reverse side. Handle with a few scratches. Blade 7", 11-3/4" overall. (B) Nickel silver guard and ferrule with turned handle of wood, the front portion ebonized; back portion of handle unscrews to reveal secret compartment concealing three bone dice. Clip point blade deeply etched on face of blade SUPE[RIOR] CUTLERY S[HEFF]IELD. c. late 19th century. CONDITION: Blade with moderate sharpening and scattered light spotting, handle with two cracks, the cap possibly a replacement.
