Huge double edged blade 1-5/8" wide, faintly marked on ricasso UNWIN & RODGERS, SHEFFIELD and on reverse CAST STEEL BOWIE KNIFE. Blade shows traces of foliate etching on obverse. Swell center nickel silver handle frame with guard and shell pommel; stag scales with escutcheon on obverse. Faint inked number on ricasso from previous collector. Solid nickel silver sheath. Circa 1830s-1840s, maker Unwin & Rodgers was founded in the 1820s and remained in business throughout the peak years of the bowie knife era. CONDITION: Blade with light pitting overall, point rounded, one small nick in edge. Handle with lengthwise crack on reverse and two small cracks on obverse. Sheath may be a replacement.
