This sword is featured in figure 23 on page 34 of "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords" by Daniel D. Hartzler. He identifies this sword as the work of David Hall, who worked on Second Street in Philadelphia until 1779. Of early 18th century form, this sword has a tapered diamond-section double-edged blade with a pierced partial fuller in the center. The solid silver hilt features a clam shell guard with relief borders and sprigs of foliage in the center on both sides. The front edge has a small "DH" hallmark. The round pommel has a faceted base, top marked with traces of the same "DH" hallmark. The grip is wrapped with twisted silver wire and has a braided ferrule at both ends. CONDITION: Blade retains a dark patina with some pitting overall with some wear to edges and minor nicks. Hilt retains a grey patina with some areas of heavier patina, scattered scuffing, minor denting and bending. Grip is excellent and tight. This is a fantastic Philadelphia silver-hilted officer's or wealthy gentleman's sword. DMG
