Heavy 14k Gold man's ring that features a large red center stone that could be a garnet. Ring is jeweler engraved in script "S.D. Puller - West Point, Virginia, U.S.A." Puller and his brother were both born in West Point. Samuel was a LtCol in the United States Marines and was the younger brother of five time Navy Cross recipient LtGen Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller. Puller was a "mustang," serving as an enlisted man, before becoming an officer. He enlisted in 1929 (Muster Roll for Recruit Company D, Parris Island, SC). He was a Sgt by 1931, at the Washington Barracks (8th & I). He was commissioned a 2nd Lt in March of 1932. He held assignments on numerous ships and part of Marine detachments afloat, and was Captain of the 1939 USMC Reserve rifle and pistol team at the National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. He was in HQ Co. / 3rd Division prior to joining the Raiders in '43. Samuel was the Commanding Officer of the 1st Marine Raider Regiment from Dec 27, 1943-Jan 25, 1944. He was appointed the Executive Officer of the 4th Marine Regiment on Jan 26, 1944. He was killed by a Japanese sniper on Guam on July 27, 1944. He was most likely wearing this ring when he was killed in action. Ring shows period wear on the high points and features a "droop wing" style eagle, globe and anchor corps device to one side with the letters "USMC" at the bottom, and a crest that features a hand with an upraised axe. He is buried in the Punchbowl in Honolulu along with thousands of other Pacific War veterans. CONDITION: Excellent overall.
