Heavy cavalry saber and scabbard by Nathaniel Starr made under government contract. Sword has a 32" curved unfullered clip point blade with iron hilt, stirrup-style knuckle guard and leather covered wood grip. Ricasso is stamped "P/ HHP/ N. STARR". Reverse side has wonderful and rare state militia marking that reads "S. CAROLINA." There is collector speculation that these swords may have seen southern service during the Civil War. CONDITION: Blade is bright with overall scabbard rubs and light mottling with no major nicks along the edge. Hilt retains gebnerous traces of silver or nickel-plated finish. Grip has been professionally re-wrapped. Iron scabbard fits sword perfectly and is free of major dents, also shows traces of silver finish.
